Most recognizable for its 630-foot Gateway Arch that dominates the downtown skyline, St. Louis is the second largest city in the state of Missouri with one of the largest metropolitan areas in the United States, which includes communities across the Mississippi River in Illinois. The city was founded in 1764 and named for Louis IX of France. It became a thriving port along the Mississippi River through the Louisiana Purchase, and had a peak population during the 1950s when suburbanization increased and heavy industry jobs declined.

Today, the city of St. Louis has a population of nearly 320,000, and the St. Louis Metropolitan area is home to more than 2,905,000 people. The city's economy thrives on several different industries with corporations including Express Scripts, Monsanto, and Sigma Aldrich.
